NARFE's Mission
NARFE's Vision BRIEF HISTORY OF NARFE The National Active & Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) supports those who now and in the past have served the nation through their years of federal service. NARFE is the only association dedicated full time to protecting the well-earned retirement benefits of federal civilian employees, retirees, and their survivors.Founded by 14 federal charter members in 1921, NARFE has grown to approximately 400,000 members, and has become a major force on Capitol Hill and across the nation.. It is the Legislative Voice for federal workers and retirees. At the field level, NARFE has approximately 1,650 chapters in the 50 State Federations, the District of Columbia, Panama, the Philippines and Puerto Rico. NARFE chapters have existed in the state of Minnesota for over 50 years and currently there are 28 active chapters in the state. The first state federation convention was held Sep 26-27, 1966 in Duluth, MN, hosted by the Duluth Chapter. Conventions have been held every year since then with host chapters rotating about every ten years as host. NARFE members also participate in community service opportunities through our annual Scholarship Awards Program and Emergency Assistance Programs. NARFE members also contribute and fund raise for Alzheimers Research, and since 1985 have contributed over $5,000,000.00. NARFE has had many legislative accomplishments in gaining new benefits, retaining current benefits, and has been especially successful, by its constant presence on Capitol Hill , by preventing passage of legislation that would affect our benefits negatively. Individual state federations have had great influence in obtaining or retaining state income tax exclusions on civil service annuities. A movement to accomplish this in the state of Minnesota is currently underway.NARFE members receive a monthly magazine, "NARFE - For Current and Retired Federal Employees," which keeps them well informed on legislative or administrative actions that affect their income security and retirement benefits. NARFE has well-informed service officers at every level across the country to provide retirement, health insurance and death benefits assistance whenever needed. Membership is open to any civilians employed at any agency of the federal or District of Columbia* government, including postal workers, as follows: Retirees; Current employees; Spouses and also surviving spouses of those eligible to join NARFE; Former employees, and Former spouses who are legally eligible for a federal annuity. * Prior to October 1, 1987 |
